AYURVEDA

An introduction

What is Ayurveda?

In the classical Ayurvedic view, health brings together balanced bodily functions, digestion, tissues and elimination, alongside wellbeing of the mind, senses and spirit. This whole-person perspective underlies the Ayurvedic approach.Originating in India, Ayurveda considers food, daily routines, surroundings and individual differences when discussing health.Within this tradition, ideas such as the doshas and Prakriti provide a framework for describing a person’s constitution. These concepts belong to Ayurvedic theory; they should not be read as laboratory findings or used on their own to identify an illness.

Vata, Pitta & Kapha

The three doshas are used together in classical Ayurveda to describe different aspects of bodily function.

Movement

Vata is associated with movement in Ayurvedic theory. The traditional elements of air and space are used to express its mobile qualities.

Vata

Transformation

Pitta

Pitta describes processes of transformation, including digestion, within the Ayurvedic framework. Its qualities are traditionally discussed through fire and water.

Structure & cohesion

Kapha

Kapha is associated with structure, cohesion and lubrication in Ayurvedic descriptions of the body. Earth and water express its traditional qualities

Medicinal substances & plants

Dravyagunavijnan

Dravyagunavijnan brings the study of medicinal substances into focus: what a material is, how it is identified and how its properties are described in Ayurveda.Medicinal plants form an important part of this field. Their identification, the plant parts used and the quality of the material are subjects of study. Dr. Jincy completed her MD in Dravyagunavijnan.Knowing a plant’s name alone does not establish whether a preparation is suitable for an individual. General descriptions of herbs are not instructions for self-medication.
